Narada questioned the four Kumaras thus, "O worshipable ones, can a ghost also achieve liberation by listening to Srimad Bhagavatam?" The Kumaras replied, "O Narada, every category of living entity in the eight million four hundred thousands types of bodies and even ghosts can achieve liberation just by hearing Srimad Bhagavatam." To help illustrate their statement the Kumaras narrated the following history:

On the bank of the Tungabhadra River lived a Brahmana named Atmadeva. He was well versed in the scriptures and had all good qualities required for achieving liberation from this world. His wife's name was Dhundhuli and she was very cunning, arrogant and barren. Atmadeva was very gentle by nature and did not interfere with anything Dhundhuli did, but he was in anxiety because they were childless. One day, without informing his wife, Atmadeva went to a forest where he met a swami whose face was filled with vigor. Atmadeva revealed to him that he had no children and the swami wanted to help him. The swami extended his mercy saying, "No one can remove what is written in their luck, but everyone should endeavor for their fulfillment." The swami then gave a piece of fruit to Atmadeva and said, "This fruit is generative and is infallible, if your wife eats this fruit she will surely become pregnant." When Atmadeva returned home he gave this piece of fruit to his wife and revealed the quality of this special fruit, but Dhundhuli, being unprincipled by nature, did not eat the fruit but instead fed it to their cow. A few days later Dhundhuli's sister came to visit her and told her she was pregnant. Dhundhuli told her sister the history of the special fruit and that she did not want to take a pregnancy to term, so she fed the fruit to their cow. Dhundhuli then requested her sister to give up her newly born child for monetary compensation and her sister being poor, agreed to the transaction. Atmadeva was unaware of this covert scheme. The Sastra (ancient scripture) states that the luck of a man can be foretold through astrology, but what a cunning woman will do next cannot be foretold even by the creator of the universe, Lord Brahma. But well mannered ladies are glorified in the scriptures because they act properly at every step.

After some time Dhundhuli's sister gave birth to a boy and he was secretly taken to Dhundhuli, unknown to Atmadeva. When Atmadeva heard a child crying he came to know that a boy had taken birth in his house. After some time their cow also gave birth to a human looking child. Dhundhuli named her boy Dhundhukari; and because the cow's offspring appeared human but had cow-like ears, Atmadeva named him Gokarna (for having ears resembling that of a cow's). During the children's upbringing, Dhundhukari did not learn anything in school, whereas Gokarna learned all the scriptures properly in a short time. When Dhundhukari reached youth, he was rowdy and mischievous, whereas Gokarna was very gentle and well mannered. Dhundhukari would daily engage with prostitutes, eat meat, took intoxication, stole, gambled, engaged in criminal acts, set fire to others' houses, and kept the company of unwanted people. Seeing the undesirable acts of his son, Atmadeva became very morose and by the advice of Gokarna, left for the forest to perform austerity.

Gokarna thought living with such a mischievous person is not good, so he left to visit places of pilgrimage. With his father and Gokarna gone, Dhundhukari squandered all the wealth of the house on prostitutes and then beat his mother for want of more money. But being unable to supply money to Dhundhukari, Dhundhuli committed suicide by jumping into a nearby well. Now Dhundhukari was free to do as he liked. Therefore he daily went to the forest and killed animals to bring home to eat and brought five prostitutes to live in the house. In order to fulfill the prostitutes' demands he would gamble, commit robbery, and engage in many other illegal activities. For a normal man it can be difficult to fulfill the demands of one wife, therefore one can only imagine how much anxiety Dhundhukari was in to have to provide for five prostitutes. One day the prostitutes had a discussion and concluded that some day Dhundhukari will be caught by constables for robbing people, and when he is interrogated they will also be implicated and punished. Therefore they decided to kill Dhundhukari. One day when he was asleep, four of the prostitutes strangled him with a rope while the fifth one poured burning red hot charcoal into his mouth, killing him. The prostitutes then collected all the remaining wealth and left the house. Dhundhukari, being a very sinful person and having received such an untimely death, became a ghost and haunted the house. After some time Gokarna returned from pilgrimage and being tired, fell asleep in the house. In his ghostly existence, Dhundhukari made many disturbing noises, which disturbed Gokarna's sleep. Gokarna then understood that the sinner Dhundhukari had died untimely and had become a ghost. A genuine devotee only thinks of benefiting others; thus Gokarna being a genuine devotee decided to liberate the ghost (Dhundhukari) from that existence.

Gokurna then embarks on a deep dhyan (meditation) to Surya Deva (Sun God) to learn how to address this. The Sun God advices him to recite the Srimad Bhagavatham

To liberate the ghost from that existence, Gokarna decided to recite Srimad Bhagavatam in seven days in that house. He invited the local residents to attend and informed them that Dhundhukari had become a ghost. The local residents accepted the invitation and the recitation of Bhagavatam began on Asadha Sukla Navami day (which takes place in light part of June-July). Gokarna got a seven-knotted bamboo and erected it before the seat he would recite Bhagavatam from so that the ghost (Dhundhukari) could sit upon the tip and listen to the Bhagavatam narration (per the scriptures a ghost can only sit upon a bamboo and no where else). After the first day of narration was complete, the first knot of the bamboo cracked, which indicated that Dhundhukari was getting closer to liberation. Day after day the knots cracked until the seventh knot cracked, indicating that Dhundhukari had become free from that ghostly existence. Then a celestial Vimana aircraft arrived from the spiritual world to take him there. Upon seeing the spiritual Vimana aircraft, Gokarna asked the aircraft attendants, "Why have you brought only one aircraft? Other people have heard the Srimad Bhagavatam narration as well. Why haven't you brought Vimana for them?" To this the aircraft attendants replied, "Even though the others have heard Srimad Bhagavatam, they did not develop sufficient faith as Dhundhukari has and they did not accept the ideals of Bhagavatam. After hearing Bhagavatam they remained fixed in their ways. Except for Dhundhukari, no one genuinely adopted the path of Srimad Bhagavatam, which is why only Dhundhukari is qualified to be liberated at this time. Only Krsna is the Supreme God, Lord of all the Lords, and no one other than Him is God. He is the ultimate well-wisher of all. Anyone who does not accept this absolute truth will never be benefited in life. Those who do not accept scriptural instructions and those who do not accept the Supremacy of Lord Krsna cannot be liberated from this world even though they are religious and/or are practicing spiritual life."

Upon hearing the Vimana attendants words, Gokarna again recited Srimad Bhagavatam, by hearing which all the listeners developed unshakable faith in Lord Krsna and concluded that He is the Supreme God; that glorifying the Lord and chanting His name is the sole goal of every human being; and that every living entity is His servant. With this firm faith and by Gokarna's mercy, another Vimana came from the spiritual world and took everyone there to live eternally.

There was a king whose prime minister was a great devotee. He always used to provide solace for others and pacify persons who came to him for help with their worldly troubles. He used to say, “You should not be disturbed or disheartened. You do not know what you did in your past life. You do not know what you will do in the future. So by seeing this present loss you should not be disturbed. There should have been a greater loss but by the Grace of Sri Krishna it has been reduced. It is all for the best! It is all for the best! Don’t be disheartened”.

Once, the king went to hunt in the forest along with his prime minister and other soldiers. In ancient times kshatriyas used to go to jungles for hunting. While roaming in the jungle the soldiers became separated from the king and the prime minister. While the king and his prime minister were moving separately through the jungle the king saw a beast. The king shot an arrow to kill the beast but by mistake the arrow went through his thumb. The finger was cut and there was profuse bleeding. Out of pain he was expressing his sorrow, “I am supposed to always fight. My thumb, which is vital for archery, is cut. It is a great loss.” The prime minister tried to pacify him, saying “You do not know what you did in your past life and you do not know what you will do in the future. There should have been a greater loss but by the Grace of Sri Krishna it is reduced. So you should not worry.”

But the king was enraged and said “My finger is cut and it is bleeding profusely. It is a serious loss to me but you are saying whatever is done by the Supreme Lord is good for me. You can advise me but if suffering comes to you and I advise you in the same way, what will you think?” The Prime minister replied, “It is applicable to all. Krishna takes care of everybody. A greater loss has been saved.”The king was furious and thought “I will teach you.” He continued walking with the prime minister through the jungle when he saw a well in the distance, covered with bushes and grass. Taking his prime minister the king went near the well and all of a sudden he pushed the prime minister into it. The king said “Whatever is done by the Lord is for your good.” The prime minister said, “Yes without His will you cannot push someone into the well. It is His desire that you push me. Trust me! Trust me! Since He is all good it is for the best.”

The king challenged “Where is your God? I am here and you are there, where is your God? If I leave this place will He rescue you?”

The prime minister replied from the well “If Hari protects someone then nobody can kill him and if Hari wants to kill someone then nobody can protect him. They have no power.”

The king said “Oh! You haven’t given up your dog mentality. So, you can stay here and you can die here.” When a person becomes enraged their mind becomes disturbed and at this time the king’s mind was disturbed.

In that jungle there were many robbers. They used to worship goddess Kali to bring about the fulfilment of their robbery. They had just been successful in a robbery and wanted to sacrifice a man to goddess Kali for her satisfaction. They brought a pujari and asked him to perform puja and they went out to find a man for offering. They soon found the king and they thought, “Goddess Kali is so gracious! She has sent man to us and we did not even have to go to the village or the town.”

The dacoits surrounded the king, arrested him and tied him up. Then they they took him to the pujari for sacrifice. According to the religious rules the king needed to be bathed before being sacrificed. So the king was first taken to a tank and bathed and then he was taken to the pujari. Just as the pujari was about to sacrifice the king he saw that the king’s thumb was seriously injured and bleeding. If an injured person is sacrificed the result will be reversed. So, the pujari told the robbers “If this man is sacrificed the result will be bad because he is injured.”

The robbers exclaimed “Oh no! This spoils all our efforts and money. Release this person. Get out!”

When the King finally made his way back to his own capital he started to realise that what the prime minister had said was correct. “If my thumb had not been injured my life would have been finished. So I have committed a great offense to my prime minister. Now I don’t know if he is alive or not! I did a terrible thing out of anger!” So he immediately ordered his army of soldiers to go and rescue the prime minister.

When they arrived near the well they found the prime minister sitting on the grass chanting Harinam. By the Lord’s Grace he had not suffered much. When he was brought back to the kingdom the king bowed down, explained what had happened to him and said. “I have committed a great offense, please excuse me.”

“No! No! It's OK. You have acted according to God’s desire and because of that I have benefited. By pushing me in the well you actually saved my life. If I had been with you the dacoits would have sacrificed me instead. We did not know what we did in the past and what we will do in the future. So we cannot see the adjustment.”

Whatever is done, is done by the will of the Supreme Lord and it is for the good of all. ‘tat te ‘nukampam sushamiksa mano’ (Srimad Bhagavatam 10.14.8). If you can see His Grace in every circumstance then you can attain Him. If you are disturbed then you cannot. ‘tat te ‘nukampa sushamiksa mano’. If you can see things as they are then you will see God's Grace in every circumstance.

We are reaping the fruits of our own actions, so we should not blame others for our misfortune. We are all reaping the fruits of our own actions. As you sow, so shall you reap.

Srimad Bhagavatam following 2 verses 3.1.15 and 16 teaches us how Vidura controlled his insult from Duryodhana without uttering a word in return, he just left the palace accepting it as Krishna’s benediction. Duryodhana said,

nirvaasyataam aashu puraac chvasaanah

"Who asked him to come here, this son of a kept mistress? He is so crooked that he spies in the interest of the enemy against those on whose support he has grown up. Toss him out of the palace immediately and leave him with only his breath."

Bhagavatham and Kaliyuga

The people of Kali yuga are short lived and rich in four serious defects namely mandah (lazy about spiritual life), sumandah mati(misguided), manda bhaagya (unlucky) and upadrutah (always disturbed mentally) and with the above 4 qualities Bhagavata purana helps them to come out of those defects as follows.

1. bhaati sarveshu vedeshu – Because the purana highlights the meanings of the Vedas in a lucid manner, the people of Kaliyuga (mandah – Lazy) can understand the conclusion of the Vedas without studying them in full which involves great study of Sanskrit grammar and phonetics etc. Bhagavata purana spoon-feeds the knowledge of Supreme Reality to complement our lazy mentality.

2. gatih sarveshaam jantunaam – In Kali yuga, the people are sumandha matayah (misguided without a proper spiritual goal) and hence they cannot ascertain the proper spiritual goal/destination in life. They take wealth acquisition and sense enjoyment as the goal and nothing more. For such people this work gives the actual goal of human life in simple terms.

3. varam sarveshu puraneshu – Even if the people take interest in the scriptures and spiritual life, in Kali yuga they will be confused about the apparent contradictions in the different scriptures and come to wrong conclusions about the Supreme Lord’s Identity and our relation with Him. The result is they adopt spiritual practices that are not suitable for Kali yuga and hence suffer without a proper spiritual shelter (manda bhagya- unlucky). Bhagavatam being the best of the puranas, it points to the Absolute Truth very clearly without any confusion and the process of realizing the Absolute Truth in a practical way. So an unfortunate person who takes shelter of Bhagavatam becomes the most fortunate.

4. taran sarva paapmaanaam – The people of Kali Yuga have great attraction for performing sinful activities and hence they will be physically and mentally always disturbed (upadrutah). For such people, Bhagavatam helps them get rid off this sinful tendency by giving knowledge, devotion and detachment and hence people can become indifferent to all disturbances by taking shelter of this scripture.

Due to the above mentioned qualities, though in Kali yuga people have short lives, they can achieve the same spiritual perfection which was possible for the people of Satya yuga (who lived for many many years) provided they take shelter of the message of the Bhagavata purana.

Thus the unique importance of the Bhagavata purana in the age of Kali is established by great authorities and it is also confirmed in the Bhagavata purana (1.3.43) itself as follows.

krishne svadhaamopagate / dharma jnaanaadhibhih saha
kalau nashta drisham esha / puraanarka adhunodhitah
"This Bhagavata Purana is as brilliant as the sun, and it has arisen just after the departure of Lord Krishna to His own abode, accompanied by religion, knowledge, etc. Persons who have lost their vision due to the dense darkness of ignorance in the age of Kali shall get light from this Purana".

Bhagavatam A Major Contribution to the Understanding of God

The Vedas deal with many subjects. They are the books of a highly developed civilization and cover all departments of knowledge. Among them, Srimad-Bhagavatam (also known as the Bhagavata Purana) deals exclusively with subjects about God. Srimad means "beautiful" or "opulent," and Bhagavatam means "related to God." Hence, Srimad-Bhagavatam can be translated as "The Beautiful Story of God."

Srimad-Bhagavatam describes God, our relationship with Him, and the process for realizing that relationship. Its 18,000 verses give detailed accounts of God's names, forms, nature, personality, devotees, activities, residences, and much more.

In one of the opening chapters, the narrator explains that the sage Vyasadeva, who wrote portions of the Vedic literature and compiled the rest, felt dissatisfied despite his accomplishments. Under the order of his guru, he then embarked on writing Srimad-Bhagavatam, considered the ripe fruit of the tree of the Vedas.

Catuhsloki Bhagavat - Vedic Essence
To Lord Brahma the topmost devotee of the Lord within the universe, the Personality of Godhead replied to his four principal inquiries in four important statements, which are known as the original Bhagavatam in four verses. Brahma's questions:

(1) What are the forms of the Lord both in matter and in transcendence?
(2) How are the different energies of the Lord working?
(3) How does the Lord play with His different energies?
(4) How may Brahma be instructed to discharge the duty entrusted to Him?

SB 2.9.33:
Sri Bhagavan uvacha : aham evasam evagre nanyad yat sad-asat
param pascad aham yad etac ca yo 'vasisyeta so 'smy aham

Brahmā, it is I, the Personality of Godhead, who was existing before the creation, when there was nothing but Myself. Nor was there the material nature, the cause of this creation. That which you see now is also I, the Personality of Godhead, and after annihilation what remains will also be I, the Personality of Godhead.

SB 2.9.34:
rte 'rtham yat pratiyeta na pratiyeta catmani
tad vidyad atmano mayam yathabhaso yatha tamah

O Brahmā, whatever appears to be of any value, if it is without relation to Me, has no reality. Know it as My illusory energy, that reflection which appears to be in darkness.

SB 2.9.35:
yatha mahanti bhutani bhutesuccavacesv anu
pravistany apravistani tatha tesu na tesv aham

O Brahmā, please know that the universal elements enter into the cosmos and at the same time do not enter into the cosmos; similarly, I Myself also exist within everything created, and at the same time I am outside of everything.

SB 2.9.36:
etavad eva jijnasyam tattva jijnasunatmanah
anvaya-vyatirekabhyam yat syat sarvatra sarvada

A person who is searching after the Supreme Absolute Truth, the Personality of Godhead, most certainly search for it up to this, in all circumstances, in all space and time, and both directly and indirectly.

The chanting of the above slokas will have their own abundant and blissful Trancendental sound vibrations to influence the mind and intelligence of the person who chants them for they have been taught by the LORD NARAYANA (KRISHNA) to the first living being in the creation, LORD BRAHMA in order to progress in our goal to understand and reach Krishna. Further, reading or chanting of the four stanzas tantamounts to reading all the 18,000 stanzas in Srimad Bhagavatam. Brahma inturn taught to Maharshi Narada who preached the same to his disciple Sri Krishna Dwaipayana Vyasa Deva and in this way they are handed our down the line.

Incident
After compiling the Vedic literature, Puranas, etc., Vyasadeva was still feeling unsatisfied. While thinking in this way Narada Muni reached the cottage of Vyasadeva and was asked about the cause of dissatisfaction. Narada Muni explained that because he (Vyasadeva) did not directly describe Krsna's pastimes, and instead gave a license to enjoy sense gratification under religious principles, he was remaining unsatisfied. Narada then instructed Vyasadeva in the catur sloka, or catuhsloki the essence of the Veda. Vyasadeva took these four verses and expanded them to compile the Srimad Bhagavatam

But if you become Krsna conscious, simply depend on Krsna's glancing, tava viksitaih, …, Krsna will supply you everything. There is no question of scarcity. … sometimes we find that the grains and fruits are produced in huge quantity. One cannot finish. So it is a question of Krsna's glance. If Krsna likes, He can produce huge quantity of grains and fruits and vegetables. And if He, Krsna controls, then what your meat will do? You can eat me. I shall eat you. That will go on, but that will not solve the problem. Therefore for real peace of life, tranquility … sufficient supply of foodstuffs, sufficient supply of milk and water, everything, arrangement is there. Simply we have to depend on Krsna.

Happiness, everyone aspires for happiness. Nobody aspires for distress, but distress is forcibly come upon you. Similarly, the sastra says, "As distress comes without any desire, similarly, happiness also will come without any endeavor." So long we are in the material world, the so-called happiness and distress will come and go, but our, the human life, the endeavor should be how to find out or revive our relationship with God. That is our main business. They are just like seasonal changes, happiness and distress. Matra-sparsas tu kaunteya sitosna-sukha-duhkha-dah. Just like there is winter season. It is pinching cold. That will also not stay. And the scorching heat, that will also not stay. It comes and goes. Therefore, so long in the material world we are, the so-called happiness and distress will come and go. Don't bother about it. You simply try for reviving your Krsna consciousness, or God consciousness.
